About

Charles Turzak (1899–1986) was an American artist celebrated for his masterful woodblock prints that captured the architectural and cultural spirit of early 20th-century Chicago. Born in Streator, Illinois, Turzak developed his skills through a combination of self-directed study and formal training, ultimately creating works that blend historical narrative with modernist design.

His most famous project, Abraham Lincoln: A Biography in Woodcuts (1933), remains a landmark achievement, while his broader oeuvre includes architectural studies, cityscapes, and later abstract experiments. Turzak’s prints are held in major collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery of Art, and his work continues to inspire appreciation for the city’s history and the art of printmaking.
